It’s hard to deny that the NBA is one of the fastest-growing media entities in the world. As more people worldwide fall in love with basketball, more eyes are paying attention to the league and its collection of likable stars. The amount of attention also means more money coming in for the league and its primary investors.
This fact is on the mind of Adam Silver and his colleagues as they have recently begun looking at their recent contracts and possible ways to improve the quality of the basketball they’re providing to their fans. They’re doing all this while keeping the game experience as pure and free from external factors as possible.
Of course, one of the measures the league is approaching things is with a better media deal. It’s clear that the league office is mulling over possible options and which ones would serve their cause better.
Adam Silver opens the door for more NBA teams to join through expansion
A piece by The Straits Times writes about Silver’s approach to a better media deal, which also touches on one important thing:
“They’re going to be long-term deals. I’m hoping, we’re not done yet, but they’ll be successful in terms of generating more money for the league and the teams and then we’ll be in a position to look at expansion.”
The last part of the statement caught the eyes of many hoops fans. The NBA has two fewer teams than the National Football League (NFL) and the National Hockey League (NHL), so adding two more expansion teams will allow more fans to come in and regularly watch games.
However, Silver has made it clear that he will not compromise the basketball being played for the sake of profits and more market share:
“It’s not preordained that we’ll expand,” Silver added.
“I’ve said it before, you’ve got to look at the dilution, potentially, of talent, but there’s so much great basketball being played around the world.
“I don’t think there’s any doubt that over time, this league can sustain two more teams. And there’s interest in the market, so once we finish our media deals, we’ll turn our attention to that.”
GIven Silver’s statements, it might be quite a while before new teams get added into the NBA. However, this gives basketball fans in places like Seattle, Las Vegas, and Mexico hope that an NBA team might be on their way.
