The Dallas Mavericks are staring into the abyss of a lost season, and potentially a lost decade. Following the trade of 25-year-old Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, in February, the Mavs were counting on the duo of Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis to lead the team to a championship within two or three years.
Davis played in 31 minutes in his first appearance following his trade from the Lakers before he suffered a left adductor strain that has caused him to be sidelined. Irving tore his ACL on Monday night. Playoff hopes for this season are realistically over, and the future is murky for Davis as Irving might not be healthy for the 2025-26 season.
The Dallas Mavericks are losing a coach

On Thursday, just a few days after the Mavs lost Irving, a key assistant coach chose to take a job at the college level. Per ESPN, Alex Jensen is taking the head coaching job for the Utah Utes.
“Dallas Mavericks assistant Alex Jensen has accepted the job as the next coach at Utah, sources tell me and Jeff Borzello,” Pete Thamel posted on X. “He’s a former star player there and has been an NBA assistant since 2013. He’s a former head coach of the Canton Charge in the G League.”

Alex Jensen is going home to the Utah Utes Basketball program

At 48, Jensen is going back home. He played basketball for Utah in college following his playing days at Viewmont High School in Bountiful, Utah. Jensen coached for the Utah Jazz as an assistant coach from 2013-2023. He joined the Mavsleaving the Jazz.
The Utes gig will be the first head coaching job for Jensen at the major college or NBA level. He briefly coached the Cleveland Charge in the NBA G League from 2011-2013 before taking the assistant coaching gig with the Jazz.
