Plenty of NBA stars made their mark in the 90s despite the dominance of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Alonzo Mourning is among the plethora of impressive NBA stars whose career was cast under a Jordan-sized shadow.
He started his NBA career with the Charlotte Hornets, but it was with the Miami Heat that he gained popularity as a star player. He enjoyed a successful 15-year career.

His post-NBA career was quieter compared to other stars, but he had his own set of challenges that he had to deal with. It’s known over the past couple of years that he’s battling cancer to spend more time with his family.
There’s an update about the status of his battle with cancer, and fans immediately showed their support for the former Miami big man.
Alonzo Mourning receives support from fans after recovering from cancer

Mourning was battling Stage 3 prostate cancer for the past couple of years. Part of his battle was having his prostate removedd to prevent the cancerous cells from spreading across his body.
He talked about the experience of living with testicular cancer, as reported by The Spun’s Matt Hladik:
“What scares me about this disease is that there are so many men walking around feeling great and have that cancer in them and they don’t know it,” Mourning said. “The only way to find out is to get their blood tested and get their PSA checked. There are 3.3 million men living in the U.S. with prostate cancer, and many don’t even know it. I was one of those guys.”
Thankfully, it seems like the procedure went successfully, as the former NBA star is on the road to recovery. Fans immeidately expressed their support:
“I’ve interviewed him, I’ve bumped into him on the sidewalk…He’s ALWAYS been a NICE guy. Prayers up,” said reporter Layron Livingston.
“Prayers and positive vibes for Alonzo Mourning,” a Heat fan added. “He’s the reason why I’m a Heat fan, and one of just a very small handful of celebs/athletes that I idolize. He’s a warrior and a survivor. He beat kidney disease in the 00s, and now he dunked on cancer. Speedy recovery, Zo.”
“Blessings and prayers for Alonzo Mourning,” a Georgetown fan chimed in.
“Praise God,” added Fox Sports commentator Emmanuel Acho.
Alonzo Mourning was a superb center during his time in the league. He played 838 NBA games across the 90s and 2000s, averaging 17.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 2.8 blocks a game. He’s a seven-time All-Star and an NBA champion with the Miami Heat.
