Teams will always plan their games around Anthony Edwards whenever they face the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 23-year-old All-Star causes plenty of headaches for head coaches across the league since leaving him open usually ends in a made basket.
The Boston Celtics are no exception when handling the Georgia alum. The 2023 NBA champions knew holding the Ant-Man at bay was crucial for their narrow 118-115 victory at Target Center. The close final score despite successfully containing the team’s franchise player shows how thin the difference between the two teams is.
While the defeat sucked for many T’Wolves fans, Edwards couldn’t help but focus on the type of defensive coverage he had to endure during the game.
Anthony Edwards complains about the double teams he got from the Boston Celtics
Edwards didn’t mince his words when asked about his performance against the Eastern Conference’s second seed. He stressed that he could do without the Celtics sending an extra body his way whenever he has the ball.
Per Athlon Sports’ Madz Dizon:
“I don’t know what to do honestly,” Edwards confessed.
“It’s frustrating to see these guys cooking us and I can’t cook them.”
Edwards also admitted that it’s hard for him to focus whenever teams like the Celtics throw extra bodies his way because he’s wired to score whenever he touches the ball.
You can’t blame the C’s for throwing one more defender due to his performances against them. He averaged 26.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 5.7 assists in his nine games against them. His 15 points on January 2 is the lowest he scored against the Celtics in his young career.
Anthony’s awareness of his weaknesses is one good thing T’Wolves fans can take away from this interview. The young superstar knows that teams will continue to disrupt him with their defensive schemes if he remains a lethal presence on the hardwood.
The onus is on him to overcome these challenges and continue as a pesky defensive assignment for coaching staves across the league. He’ll become an unstoppable force if he finds a way to consistently neutralize double teams.
