Many Minnesota Timberwolves fans held their breath to see how Anthony Edwards would fare with Julius Randle. The sudden trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to MSG rattled many Timberwolves fans given how well the team performed the previous offseason.
There’s no question among people who follow the Timberwolves that Ant is the focal point of the franchise. The incredible performances the Georgia product has showcased in his still-young NBA career are enough to have the Minnesota front office do everything to provide him with the best roster they can build to help him win.
Many would look at the Minnesota roster and not think highly about their hopes for a deep playoff run. However, one analyst argues that the deal is already doing wonders for Chris Finch’s Timberwolves.
Analyst believes Anthony Edwards can thrive in partnership with Julius Randle based on how they’re playing
Charlie Watson of Zone Coverage reported that the offensive approach Minnesota took with the Edwards-Randle duo is going swimmingly for the squad:
Minnesota’s offense has flowed through Randle. Finch allows Julius to play how he prefers and frequently puts the ball in his hands. Edwards said the Wolves needed to fit around Randle, and that is precisely what is unfolding three weeks into the season. However, it would not be if Ant wasn’t making a sacrifice.
“[Julius] is a punisher, so we try to give him his five to six seconds where, if he doesn’t have anything, I will try to cut or relocate for him – just playing off of him,” Edwards explained to the media. “I told him, ‘I am cool with giving him the ball and just catching and shooting.’”
The compromise Minnesota’s newest 1-2 punch have agreed upon is showing its results on the hardwood. Edwards continues to make strides in his game, averaging 27.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.0 assists through seven games.
Meanwhile, Randle hasn’t returned to the form that helped him win a spot in the last All-Star Game. However, his averages of 21.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG, and 4.7 APG show that he’s on the right track of becoming a key piece to the team’s success.
The season is long, and it’s hard to predict how the first year of Edwards’ partnership with Randle will play out. However, Timberwolves fans can expect an exciting season ahead.
