“Kyrie, to me, is the greatest point guard,” Edwards said. “Anytime he gets going, it’s tough to stop him. We got a couple of big stops down the stretch and we got some buckets, which helped us.”
“He knows he’s my favorite point guard of all time, so it’s a battle,” he added. “Last year in the Playoffs, we were battling. I love to battle against him, the isos, and the matchups.”

While the NBA has a lot of rivalries amongst players from opposing teams, the relationship between Edwards and Irving has been mostly that of shared admiration and respect.
Responding to the praise the Wolves point guard gave him, Irving showed his appreciation for the kind of relationship he shares with Edwards inside the court.
“It’s inspirational, man,” Irving said. “The next generation, they’re a little different but I gotta give them credit, they challenge us to get better. They challenge us to be the heroes they saw growing up, even when you’re playing against them. They get up into your body but also they’re gonna see you be special. I have a few relationships like that around the league.”

Kyrie Irving on Anthony Edwards’ Growth: “…That’s What Makes You Great”
During the post-game press conference, Irving was asked about what growth he’s seen in Anthony Edwards, seeing that their teams have not been true rivals so far.
In his response, the Mavs point guard admitted to watching game films of Edwards and praised the latter’s drive to win.
“Just like great artists or great athletes that have come before him, he’s taken a lot from other people’s games and implemented his,” Irving said of Edwards. “That’s what makes you special, that’s what makes you great. I was watching some film on him yesterday, and just seeing him get on his guys while he’s out there, he really wants to win. And when you have that mentality every single day, it’s going to eventually carry on to your teammates.”
So far this season, Anthony Edwards is averaging 25.6 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, and 4 assists. He is currently the 10th top scorer in the league for the 2024-2025 season based on his average score.
