Some NBA guard listed at 6’3 rarely break out an in-game dunk and that’s wha makes Ashlyn Watkins’ dunk in South Carolina Gamecocks’ win against Texas Christian University Horned Frogs the more impressive.
SC cruised to an 85-52 win over the ninth-ranked TCU and Watkins’ slam was the highlight of the night.
The dunk occurred in the first quarter when the game was still close.
Watkins stole the ball from the opponents’ Madison Conner mid court and dribbled coast to coast with 6-7 forward Sedona Prince giving a chase.
The SC forward was unfazed as she went straight for the slam, to the cheers of the crowd and her bench.
Her coach Dawn Staley revealed after the game that it felt like it was something Watkins was trying to rehearse long before the tip off.
She actually was at shootaround today dunking and missing, and then she makes a play like that. She cleared her runway, she got to the left side of the floor, and I knew she was going to attempt it.

The place exploded, our bench exploded. And I think it’s great for our game.
Ashlyn Watkins dunks each season
Watkins is a female dunk specialist actually. Before joining South Carolina, she had her dunk videos making rounds on the internet already.
With that slam against TCU, she now has a dunk in each of her season in college.
The X WNBA community is just as amazed as Daley with her dunk. Some even referenced some NBA legends’ suggestion that the ring for women’s basketball should be lowered.
