The Atlanta Hawks have the No. 1 overall selection in this summer’s NBA Draft, which they can use to strengthen their roster. But while they can use it as a trade chip to get a proven veteran, according to general manager Landry Fields, they intend to keep the top pick.
“I think we’re really excited by the draft,” Fields said via the Associated Press. “And the more that we uncover, like we go, great, I’m glad we have No. 1. I keep joking around like I’m not giving it back. So, I think we’re in a really good position here. I’m excited about it, frankly.”
Everybody was surprised when the Atlanta Hawks won the NBA Draft Lottery last month since they only had 3% odds of getting the top overall pick after finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference with a 36-46 win-loss record in the 2023-24 campaign.
Now that they’re here, the Atlanta Hawks are doing all their homework ahead of the 2024 Draft, as they aim to pick someone who will be a great fit for their long-term plans.
Atlanta Hawks’ prospects for the top overall pick
Alex Sarr, Zaccharie Risacher, and Donovan Clingan are some of the top choices for the Atlanta Hawks’ No. 1 pick in this summer’s draft.
Each of them could make a case to be selected, not only because of their potential but also depending on who the Atlanta Hawks will possibly trade this offseason.
If the Atlanta Hawks move on from Clint Capela, picking Alex Sarr or Donovan Clingan is the right move to bolster their frontcourt. On the other hand, if they trade De’Andre Hunter, Zaccharie Risacher will likely be picked by the team.
