One of the top talking points during the Boston Celtics’ Media Day was Jaylen Brown winning Finals MVP over Jayson Tatum after the team won the NBA Finals last season.
The media has been trying to drive a wedge between Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown for the longest time. But Tatum, as always, shared a classy response on missing out on the prestigious individual award.
“It just wasn’t my time. Steph Curry got four rings & he only has one. Isiah Thomas, Larry Bird didn’t win Finals MVP every time. For me, I was happy for Jaylen Brown. I know that I’m gonna win Finals MVP one day,” said Tatum.
“You haven’t seen like the best version of Jayson Tatum,” he added.
Jayson Tatum struggled in the first two games of the 2024 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks, but he did much better in the next few games. He saved his best for last in Game 5, putting up 31 points, eight rebounds, and 11 assists in the title-clinching victory.
Jayson Tatum opens up on the Boston Celtics’ 2024-25 mindset
The Boston Celtics aim to become the first team since the 2017-18 Golden State Warriors to complete a repeat. And recently, Jayson Tatum echoed Joe Mazzulla’s mentality of “not defending” their NBA title.
“(Coach) Joe Mazzulla, he had a great quote the other day. He said we’re not defending anything. We’re chasing another championship. But honestly, after opening night, we have to put it behind us,” Tatum said.
“It’s a new season. Last year was last year, we accomplished something special. We’ve got to figure out a way to get better. We wanted to approach the game with the same mindset, and we did an amazing job of that last year,” he added.
