After Los Angeles Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard backed out from his commitment to play for Team USA, Boston Celtics guard Derrick White was chosen to replace the two-time NBA champion. Now, the former San Antonio Spurs star has spoken out about coming in to take Leonard’s place on the roster.
White recently joined the U.S. Men’s National Basketball Team for their first practice ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics. This marks White’s first time representing the United States at the senior international level, and he is eager to make the most of the opportunity.
During the practice session, White showcased his well-rounded skill set, impressing with his playmaking ability, perimeter defense, and scoring instincts. Head coach Steve Kerr praised White’s versatility, noting that his combination of size, athleticism, and basketball IQ make him a valuable asset to the team.
As Team USA prepares for the upcoming qualifiers, White’s addition will provide valuable depth and experience in the backcourt. With his proven track record of success in the NBA, White is expected to play a significant role in the team’s quest for a gold medal in the Olympics.
The chance to don the red, white, and blue jersey is a source of immense pride for White, who is thrilled to represent his country on the global stage. With his talent, work ethic, and team-first mentality, he is poised to make a lasting impact during his time with Team USA.
Boston Celtics Star Derrick White Shares Thoughts About Replacing Kawhi Leonard on Team USA
The Celtics star has finally caught up with Team USA and is about to play his first game against Australia. In an article by Conor Roche for Boston.com, White has spoken out about replacing Leonard after he backed out from the Olympics.
“I had assumed that Kawhi was going to continue,” White told reporters on Sunday. “When I seen all that happened [with Leonard] and I got the call, I was ready to go,” White said.
” … I just had to talk to the family and try to figure out how we can make it work and as quickly as possible. I’m super thankful and grateful and excited to be here.”
Last season, White averaged 15.2 points on 46 percent shooting from the field, 4.2 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game. He was also an instrumental piece for the Celtics as the team won their 18th ring recently, making them the franchise with the most titles in NBA history.
With White onboard, Team USA is back on track for its Olympic preparations. And even though Leonard is the more accomplished of the two, the Celtics star is projected to be more reliable, making him an important piece in the national team’s quest for gold.
