The Boston Celtics added to their championship core with the free-agent signing of Lonnie Walker IV on Wednesday, per reports.
According to renowned NBA insider Shams Charania, the 25-year-old swingman is on an Exhibit 10 contract, allowing the reigning champions to “give a bonus to Walker if he is cut after training camp and plays for the team’s G League affiliate in Maine.”
Lonnie Walker IV played for the Brooklyn Nets in 2023-24, averaging 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists on 42.3 percent shooting from the field and 38.4 percent from three-point land in 58 regular season games, all while coming off the bench.
Walker’s role will stay the same with the Boston Celtics, as he will add offensive firepower to their second unit. With Svi Mykahiliuk moving on to Utah and Oshae Brissett yet to re-sign, acquiring Lonnie Walker IV on the cheap is another masterstroke for GM Brad Stevens.
Lonnie Walker IV is “motivated” to join the Boston Celtics
Before joining the Boston Celtics, Lonnie Walker IV’s NBA future was in doubt since he was unemployed for a while, and he made a bold declaration through his X (formerly known as Twitter).
“I ain’t even reach my prime yet 😅 yall gonna see soon. The apology better be just as loud as the disrespect,” Walker posted last June.
Now that he’s with the Boston Celtics, Lonnie Walker IV has a great opportunity to compete for his first-ever NBA championship. He can carve a role as a shooter who can create offense when defenses collapse on Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, Al Horford, and Kristaps Porzingis.
