It has been over a year since the Boston Celtics traded guard Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies. It was a split that proved to be emotional for Celtics fans, as Smart played his heart out for Boston during his first nine seasons with the team.
Marcus Smart opens up about seeing the Boston Celtics win the 2024 NBA Finals
Smart was there with the Celtics in the team’s several heartbreaks in the playoffs dating back to the last decade but he was not there when Boston finally won it all last month in the 2024 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks. If people think that he wished the Celtics wouldn’t win without him out of resentment, they were all wrong.
Smart was among the happiest when he saw his former team win the title.

“Shout out to Jaylen [Brown], Jayson [Tatum] and the Boston Celtics. Congratulations on the championship… I know everybody is expecting me to be salty and sh*t… I was screaming for those guys when they won it,” Smnart said during a recent appearance on the Tidal League’s “Run Your Race.”

The Celtics sent Smart to Memphis in June 2023 via a three-team trade that also involved the Washington Wizards — the same transaction that landed Boston big man Kristaps Porzingis.
During his time with the Celtics, Smart averaged 10.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.6 steals through 581 games. He also won the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year award and was a three-time NBA All-Defensive First Team member during his stint in Beantown.
