The Boston Celtics are preparing for the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks, but that’s not the only piece of business that they have to take care of.
Once the series is finished, the Boston Celtics will start to prepare for the 2024-25 season, and they must address this summer the void that will be left by Charles Lee, who will coach for the Charlotte Hornets next season.
According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, the Boston Celtics are “exploring” the idea of bringing Jeff Van Gundy to Joe Mazzulla’s coaching staff next season. Jeff Van Gundy was hired by Boston back in October as a senior consultant under basketball operations to work with Brad Stevens.
Before joining the Boston Celtics, Jeff Van Gundy had head coaching stints with the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets for 11 seasons, compiling a 430-318 record, before becoming a renowned basketball analyst for the last 16 years at ESPN.
Jeff Van Gundy has a great relationship with Boston Celtics prez Brad Stevens
Barring unforeseen circumstances, Jeff Van Gundy is expected to be a part of the Boston Celtics coaching staff next season because of his great relationship with the team, especially Brad Stevens.
“Jeff’s been great,” Stevens said about Van Gundy in April via Brian Robb of MassLive. “And it’s all the way through that coaching staff. They’ve been terrific. Jeff, in his consultant role, our six player enhancement coaches have been amazing with our ‘stay ready’ group.”
“I will say this, I’ve known Jeff a long time and gotten a chance to spend a lot of time with him over the years. It is fun watching a game with him when he doesn’t have to speak in 15-second sound bites. He’s pretty entertaining,” he added.
Adding someone with Jeff Van Gundy’s resume is a huge plus for the Boston Celtics, who will look to contend for NBA championships not only this season but in years to come.
