The Boston Celtics have been the gold standard in the NBA for the past few seasons, and 2025 is no different. The defending champions are on a mission to keep the crown, having just dispatched the Orlando Magic in five games to advance to the second round of the playoffs.
But while their playoff run remains the priority, changes are brewing in Beantown.
ESPN’s Shams Charania dropped a bombshell on Thursday, revealing that the Celtics could be in for a major offseason overhaul—even if they go back-to-back.
“Sources have been telling me for weeks now that the Celtics will be exploring trade options in the offseason. This iteration is not gonna be sustainable for this team,” Charania said.
That “iteration” includes a core that’s stayed largely intact over the past four to five years, producing consistent results but now carrying a hefty price tag. As Charania pointed out, five Celtics players are set to earn more than $28 million next season. The projected payroll could push close to $500 million once luxury taxes kick in.

So even with a championship-caliber roster, the front office may be forced to get creative to dodge the league’s new punitive second tax apron—and that could mean big names on the move.
Funding secured for a brighter future in Boston Celtics
As the Celtics plan for an uncertain future on the court, major moves are also happening off it. After months of speculation, funding has been secured for the sale of the franchise to Bill Chisholm’s investment group.
Front Office Sports reported Thursday that the deal, valued at a record-breaking $6.1 billion, has cleared a major hurdle.
“Lead buyer Bill Chisholm’s group now has enough money to cover the cost of the deal and is in fact ‘oversubscribed,’” sources told FOS.

The sale is expected to comply with NBA private equity rules, with the group initially acquiring more than 51% of the team. While the exact stake Chisholm will hold isn’t yet confirmed, he is set to become the controlling owner once the deal is finalized.
Meanwhile, Celtics CEO and governor Wyc Grousbeck will retain his role through the 2027–28 season, helping guide the team through what could be a transformative next few years.

For now, Boston’s locked in on chasing another banner—but change is definitely on the horizon.
