Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas will be tasked with shouldering the heavy load on offense next season, especially after the team traded Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks this summer.
According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Cam Thomas can lead the league in scoring because he’ll have the green light to throw up shots, especially since he is approaching the final year of his current contract.
“I think they might be the worst (team), I think he might lead the league in scoring. I think he’s going to lead at least in shot attempts. So here’s with Brooklyn, what do you do? Do you do something that makes sense now?,” Marks said in The Lowe Post podcast.
“What does make sense mean, in the low $20’s? Is that too rich for a guy that could average 28, 30 PPG, but he’s a restricted free agent next year, he’s got such a low cap hold, you’ve got all this room,” he added.
Cam Thomas has shown signs of improvement in his first three years in the NBA. After averaging only 8.5 points per game in his rookie season, the Brooklyn Nets youngster increased his scoring to 22.5 points last season and was seventh in the Most Improved Player of the Year award voting.
Cam Thomas could command a huge payday from the Brooklyn Nets
As mentioned, Cam Thomas is entering the final year of his contract with the Brooklyn Nets, where he’ll earn roughly $4 million before becoming a restricted free agent in the summer of 2025.
If Thomas lives up to the hype next season, there’s no doubt he’ll have leverage in the negotiations with the front office.
According to NBA salary cap expert Yossi Gozlan, Cam Thomas could command between $20 and $25 million in annual salary, which could rise into the 30s if he wins a Most Improved Player of the Year trophy.
