The Brooklyn Nets are still trying to find their feet after hollowing out their future for the failed Kevin Durant-Kyrie Irving experiment. While the entire fanbase understood that the 2023-24 season would be a rough one, it didn’t reduce the pain that the fans had to endure.
Fortunately, Mikal Bridges was one of the few bright spots that made Nets basketball worth watching. The player involved in the Kevin Durant trade showed his value as a scorer in the one-and-a-half seasons he spent with the team.
While Bridges was a solid player for the Nets, everyone knew that they would have to do away with him sooner than later. It’s clear to everyone that the team is on a rebuild. While the former Villanova standout was a great player to have, he’s not in their timeline and had to be traded away.
However, they soon found themselves solving all of their solutions when the New York Knicks made a move for the guard. The five unprotected picks they got from their neighbors across the borough will do a lot in helping rebuild the team.
Moreover, one analyst details why the Brooklyn Nets got really fortunate that their cross-town rivals did what they did.
Analyst claims Brooklyn Nets fans weren’t sold on Mikal Bridges and were lucky with the trade package they got
Rick Laughland of the Nets Insider explained that not everyone was on the Bridges hype train and didn’t believe the former Phoenix Sun had the talent to build around:
Nets fans were not sold on Bridges and unsure what superstar wanted to join Brooklyn after the big three exodus of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden.
He then emphasized that the Knicks paid too much for a player of Bridges’ caliber and will use these selections to build a winning roster:
Bridges will form the Villanova Knicks to try and chase a title.
Meanwhile, they overpaid grossly for a player that has never made an All-Star appearance and the Nets get out of NBA purgatory.
If the Knicks capitalize on this three to four year window with a championship, then it was all worth it.
If not, the Nets may just use the treasure trove of picks to build a homegrown title contender in the years ahead.
The Knicks may have paid too steep a price for the Brooklyn Nets’ leading scorer, but they believed the man who averaged 19.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists through 82 games will build an impressive partnership with fellow Villanova alums in the roster.
Meanwhile, the Nets will be happy to use the selections they got to finally get their rebuild going.
