Presidential candidate Donald Trump thought he is more Greek than Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, prompting people to comment that he just made a racist remark towards an immigrant.
Trump was at a rally in Wisconsin and in an attempt to relate to the citizens, he mentioned the two-time MVP and NBA champion and claimed that he is more Greek than Antetokounmpo who is of Nigerian descent but was born and raised in Athens.
“Your team is very good. I would say the Greek is a seriously good player” said Trump who is running under the Republican party against the Democratic Party’ Kamala Harris.
“Tell me, who has more Greek in him, the Greek or me?” Trump inquired. The crowd seemed to freeze at that point, with Trump immediately adding: “I think we have about the same, right?”
Antetokounmpo was made aware of Trump’s comment but he explained that he does not follow American politics and he is just all about doing his job as a basketball player and as a family man.
“I am not aware of the comments, at the end of the day I don’t follow politics that much and the little that I follow I try to keep my own political views to myself and to my family,” he said.
“I’m here to win basketball games and answer basketball questions but I wish both candidates the best of luck.”
The response garnered different reactions from the internet. Some hailed him for not trying to insert politics in sports, something people throw at athletes who are against Trump, while others thought it was weak for not trying to make a decision for his family he said he is protecting.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s non-chalant response to recent loss
Trump said the Milwaukee Bucks are a good team but their 1-5 record says otherwise.
Giannis and his squad suffered a painful defeat yesterday in the hands of Cleveland Cavaliers, no thanks to a game-winner by Donovan Mitchell.
The Greek Freak said he is not trying to dwell on the result and will only focus on his job. He said he can’t control the result of the game.
“My job is to focus on things that I can do better. I’m a basketball player. The things I can control. I can’t control the outcome of the game,” he told reporters.
“I can control things that happen within the game and you hope that the outcome is what you like. And things that happened within the game, they were good.”
