There is no denying that the Detroit Pistons already surpassed their 2023-2024 season as they are now just three wins away from matching their total win record from last time. Cade Cunningham being a major part of this is another thing that cannot be denied.
The 2021 first overall pick, who started the season by signing a $224 million contract extension, is playing like a man on a mission ever since the opening day.
He is currently averaging an almost triple double with 23.9 points per game, 7.3 rebounds, and 9.6 assists. His season averages on points are better than that of Tyrese Haliburton, Trae Young, and Stephen Curry.
Pistons’ win-loss record might not have a lot to say when it comes to his All-Star Game chances but his coach JB Bickerstaff believes his individual play should be enough for him to get that citation.
“He defends his teammates; he carries his teammates. He is an absolutely amazing leader at this age, and you don’t see that very often,” Bickerstaff said after his team’s home loss to the Utah Jazz.
“Besides the stats, if you want a guy who deserves something and [someone] who’s a good person, a good teammate, and has all those characteristics, he’s head and shoulders above and he definitely deserves that opportunity.”
Cade Cunningham believes he’s an All-Star
The campaign for Cunningham to become an All-Star by February is getting traction, with the league’s main website even writing a piece about his chances.
The Pistons franchise player himself is aware that he is at that level and his goal is to get that star to his name.
An All-Star is someone who comes out on top ever game and Cunningham believes he is that player.
“I believe I am. Whenever I’m on the court every night, I feel like I’m the best player,” he said back in December 11 via The Athletic.
“I try to do whatever it takes to help my team win, and my teammates have made me look great this year. I’m just trying to help my team win and we’ll see what happens with it.”
