Entering the 2024-25 WNBA season with sky-high expectations, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has delivered a stellar rookie campaign, living up to the hype that came with being the No. 1 overall pick. Her impact on the court has not only thrilled fans but also caught the attention of seasoned WNBA veterans — including Sophie Cunningham.
After six seasons with the Phoenix Mercury — and having shared the floor with legend Diana Taurasi — Cunningham now joins the Fever, and she’s all-in on playing alongside Clark. “I can’t wait to get on the court and work with CC,” she said, referencing the rookie standout.
Cunningham had her eyes on Clark as early as the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game in Phoenix, where she tried to lure her away from Indiana. Clark stayed loyal to the Fever — and now, fate has brought Cunningham to her side instead.

Following their first practice together on Tuesday, Cunningham spoke highly of Clark’s skillset, comparing her to her former teammate Taurasi. “You play with the GOAT of our game, you’re gonna learn a lot,” Cunningham told The Athletic’s James Boyd. “The way (CC) throws the ball is a lot like how DT threw it. I think this is just the younger version of her.”

While Clark dazzled as a scorer during her rookie season, her court vision and passing may be her most dangerous weapon. In 2024, she led the league in assists, averaging 8.4 per game — a testament to her ability to elevate those around her.
“We’re building a championship-winning team”: Caitlin Clark ready to go all-out with reinforcements for the 2025 season
With key additions like Cunningham, DeWanna Bonner, and Natasha Howard, Indiana is no longer just rebuilding — they’re contending. And Clark, now surrounded by veteran firepower, is embracing the leadership role.
“We’re building a championship-winning team,” Clark said at training camp, which opened Sunday. “We’re excited about the pieces we’ve added — a great coaching staff, teammates who work hard, and we love playing in front of our fans. We’re fired up.”

The Fever’s new-look roster will get its first preseason test this Saturday when they face the Washington Mystics at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. If early signs are any indication, Indiana isn’t just aiming for the playoffs — they’re gunning for the crown.
