Revisiting Caitlin Clark’s rookie season
With their first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, the Indiana Fever selected Caitlin Clark and she quickly became the team’s star player. Her quick rise in the league’s ranks captured the awe of both fans and analysts, similar to when LeBron James took the NBA by storm in 2003.
Clark received a plethora of awards during her collegiate career with the Iowa Hawkeyes. She was a three-time NCAA Division I scoring leader, a three-time NCAA Division I assists leader, and a two-time NCAA Division I three-point leader. She also became a three-time Big Ten Player of the Year, three-time Big Ten tournament champion, and a three-time Big Ten tournament MVP.
All her collegiate achievements led to a lot of hype ahead of her professional debut. It did not take long for her to adjust, and her dominance in college translated well into the big leagues. She averaged 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals in her rookie season, allowing her to win the Rookie of the Year award and be selected as part of the All-WNBA First Team.
The 22-year-old guard’s phenomenal performance enabled her to set and hold numerous WNBA records, including most points and assists in a rookie season, most assists in a single game (19), fastest to reach 350 points and 150 assists, first to record 20+ points, 15+ assists, and 5+ rebounds in a single game, first rookie to record two triple-doubles, and the first player to be simultaneously named Rookie of the Month ad Player of the Month.
Caitlin Clark has made believers out of doubters, and every WNBA fan is now looking forward to seeing what more she will achieve in her sophomore season.
