The Indiana Fever’s newly hired coach Stephanie White certainly knows about Caitlin Clark. In fact, she commentated one of Clark’s games back in March last year when she was still with the Iowa Hawkeyes, in which she sang her praises.
White was part of the broadcasting team that covered the NCAA women’s basketball tournament Sweet 16 game between Iowa and Colorado. The coach had nothing but praises for the then-rising star, who put up an incredible performance that led to the Hawkeyes’ 89-68 win, allowing them to advance to the Elite Eight stage.
Clark finished that game with a double-double, recording 29 points, 15 assists, six rebounds, and a block.
“Clark already has 20 in this ball game, she has been exceptional finding her open teammates, picking her spots, getting to the rim, finishing with contact, in typical Caitlin Clark fashion,” White said.

White also revealed on the “Coaching U” podcast not long after taking the reins of the Fever that she’s watched Caitlin Clark grow into the sport and discussed ways how the 2024 Rookie of the Year and TIME Athlete of the Year could further improve her game.
“I started watching Caitlin Clark since she was in eighth grade, and then I called a lot of her games in college when she was in Iowa. And so I’ve really watched her continue to learn and grow,” White said. “I had great relationships with her coaches and had multiple conversations about what her next steps would be, and what the next level would be. She’s hungry to grow and hungry to get better.”
The coach added, “My first conversation with her the other day about Xs and Os was like, ‘Well how do you want to improve?’ And then we’ll talk about how we want to do that. And then I talk about how we can use her and help her be more efficient and more effective in general.”
Stephanie White shares the target she gave Caitlin Clark
On the same “Coaching U” podcast episode, Stephanie White revealed the target she wants Caitlin Clark to reach ahead of the next season. The coach wants the young star to be a leader for the Fever.
“She’s a great player, she’s a high IQ player,” White said. “She adjusted really quickly to this league, unbelievably quickly. And now it’s about becoming not just a great player but a great leader for this team, so we can win not just a championship but championships.”
Last season, Clark led the Fever to their first postseason appearance since 2016, only for White and the Connecticut Sun to lead them to their early exit. In the next season, White will be Indiana’s new head coach, and they will look to reinforce their roster in the hopes of faring better and recapturing another playoff berth.
