Considered by many as the greatest to ever play the sport of tennis, Serena Williams got people’s attention with a Caitlin Clark joke at the 2024 ESPYs. During her monologue, Williams made a hilarious joke about the immense popularity of the Indiana Fever super rookie (h/t FOX Sports).
“Caitlin Clark has had an amazing year and is nominated for three awards. Caitlin, you are the Larry Bird in that you are an amazing player, you have ties to Indiana, and White people are really crazy about you.”
Clark, who was born in Iowa and played college basketball for the Iowa Hawkeyes, got herself a couple of awards at the ESPYs, winning the Best Female College Athlete and the Best Record-Breaking Performance for smashing the NCAA’s all-time record in scoring.
Caitlin Clark continues to get attention on an off the court

Even in the pros, Clark continues to set records, as she tries to do it all for the Fever. Just recently, she became the first rookie ever in the history of the league to record a triple-double. So far in the 2024 WNBA regular season, Clark is racking up 16.7 points, 7.6 assists, 5.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 0.9 blocks per outing.

Williams knows what greatness is. She personifies it, having won a total of 23 Grand Slam women’s singles titles and reigned for 319 weeks during her incredible playing career. She did it all despite all the naysayers and she wants Clark to succeed just like her amid the negativities around the first-year WNBA star.
“And no matter what other people do, if people are negative then it’s because they can’t do what you do, basically. Hopefully she’ll continue to do what she’s doing,” Williams said.
