Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark touched on why she ended up picking Iowa for college back in the day, and how her close family relationship was a huge contributing factor for the decision.
In her appearance on the “New Heights” podcast hosted by NFL stars and brothers Jason and Travis Kelce, Caitlin Clark recalled how she ended up going to Iowa for college, despite getting a lot of offers from several schools.
“I basically narrowed it down pretty early on when I was going through my college recruitment that I wanted to be in the midwest, just kind of a homebody, family person, just wanted to stay fairly close to home, so that narrowed a lot of the stuff down,” Clark said.

She recalled how she considered Oregon and Texas, but ultimately decided against it due to issues of distance. She praised the tradition and culture of Notre Dame, but said that “I could feel it in my gut that I was not supposed to go there.”
“I picked Iowa, and Iowa was really good at women’s basketball even before I went there too. I wanted to go somewhere that was good, but maybe hadn’t been a blue blood per se for quite a few years and try and help them get back to that.”
Clark highlighted how Iowa also made perfect sense for her when it came to distance from her hometown, which made the choice feel like the perfect pick for her.
“That was obviously my home state too and two hours from where I grew up so, perfect distance so that your parents can show up but also you go home if you wanted to,” she added. “It just kinda worked out [perfectly].”
Caitlin Clark Recalls Getting College Offers While in Seventh Grade
In the same podcast, Caitlin Clark also revealed that she started getting offers from different colleges as early as when she was in her seventh grade. However, her parents did not let her know back then as they wanted her to focus on her middle school years and not shoot her vision too early for something that is still several years away.
“I feel very fortunate,” Clark said. “My parents told my older brother, go get the mail, we don’t want your sister to see that. They wanted me to be in seventh grade and enjoy middle school and hang out with [my] friends. You shouldn’t be worried about where you’re going to college.”
