Caitlin Clark revealed that she could not understand the attention she got from people, even in places and situations where she was not supposed to get any spotlight at all—like a Taylor Swift concert.
In her interview with TIME, Clark touched on the experience she had when she attended back-to-back shows of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Indianapolis at the Lucas Oil Stadium. As she bared in the interview, Clark expected that she would blend in with the crowd and go unnoticed—but since she is Caitlin Clark, that is not what happened.
Clark met Taylor’s mom during the concert. She also met Taylor’s boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. When people noticed Clark in a suite, they turned to her direction and started taking photos, and videos, with some people even giving her friendship bracelets—a common gesture for attendees of an Eras Tour concert.
To Clark, the attention she got at a Taylor Swift concert did not make sense.
“People are just going crazy that I’m there,” she said, recalling the experience. “I thought people would be so in their own world, ready to see Taylor. And it was just completely the opposite.”
Clark caught the attention not only of the crowd but also of Taylor Swift herself. Tay gave her four bags of Eras Tour merch. The merch bags also came with a personal note from Tay herself, saying that “inspiring to watch from afar.”
Swift also promised Caitlin Clark that “Trav and I” are excited to watch her in one of the future games of Indiana Fever. Clark was also invited to see a Chiefs game in the same box with Taylor.
Caitlin Clark Sees herself as “The Most Controversial Person”
Caitlin Clark understands that part of the fame she is enjoying now is the fact that she would not be able to please everybody. Along with fans, part of the package of fame is the haters and detractors. While she acknowledges the bad things and comments thrown at her, the WNBA star tries her best to ignore the negativity—in fact, she considers herself “controversial” rather than famous at times.
“I tell people I feel like the most controversial person,” says Clark. “But I am not. It’s just because of all the storylines that surround me. I literally try to live and treat everybody in the same exact respectful, kind way. It just confuses me at times.”
Right now, Caitlin Clark enjoys her off-season, participating in gigs like doing virtual talks for $100,000 for half an hour.
