Caitlin Clark would open her 2025 WNBA season with the Indiana Fever with a number of new teammates around her, and one of those is Sophie Cunningham, who recently opened 7p to the press on her honest feelings about Clark.
In a press interview, Cunningham talked about new teammate Caitlin Clark and the pressure she has on her as a superstar.
“She’s just had a lot of pressure on her shoulders,” Cunningham said of Clark. “No one’s walked in her footsteps, so it’s really easy to judge and just say things. At the end of the day, we just all need to empower each other and be there for each other.”
“She’s done a lot, and that rookie class, to bring attention to our league, and it’s needed. That’s what we’ve always wanted. why would we not embrace them and make sure they’re good?”
Sophie Cunningham joined the Indiana Fever as part of a four-team trade involving the Phoenix Mercury, Dallas Wings, and Connecticut Sun. In this blockbuster deal, the Fever acquired Cunningham and the No. 19 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft from the Phoenix Mercury.
The Fever also received Jaelyn Brown from the Dallas Wings. In exchange, the Wings received NaLyssa Smith from the Fever, and the Sun received the No. 8 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft from Indiana.

In a statement, Indiana Fever General Manager and COO Amber Cox described Cunningham as a player who is a “perfect fit” for their play style.
“Sophie is a player that we have targeted for a while, and one that we believe is a perfect fit for the style we want to play,” said Cox. “She is a fierce competitor, works incredibly hard on both ends of the floor, and is one of the best shooters in our league. We are excited to add her to our squad.”
“On behalf of the Fever, I’d also like to thank NaLyssa for her contributions over the last three seasons and wish her the best of luck in her next chapter,” Cox added.

Caitlin Clark’s rookie season with the Indiana Fever has had a staggering financial impact on the WNBA and the city of Indianapolis. Dr. Ryan Brewer, a valuation expert, calculated that Clark is responsible for 26.5% of the league’s activity, including attendance, merchandise sales, and television viewership.

Caitlin Clark’s presence has also led to a 300% increase in TV viewership and a 500% rise in merchandise sales, making her the top-selling player in the league.
