Cameron Brink’s mother, Michelle Bain-Brink, shared a personal tribute to Sonya Curry, mother of NBA superstar Stephen Curry, in a heartfelt birthday message commemorating their decades-old relationship.
On Sunday, Michelle posted an old photo with Sonya on her previous Instagram story, a tribute to the latter’s birthday last Friday. She also shared a short message underscoring their enduring friendship.
“Happy birthday to my day one — my ride or die — the Thelma to my Louise,” the story wrote.
Michelle’s message referenced the 1991 film Thelma & Louise, which shows an adventure-filled bond between characters Thelma and Louise.
Bain-Brink and Curry’s relationship began at Virginia Tech, where they were roommates. Michelle played on the women’s basketball team from 1985 to 1988, while Sonya was a volleyball player from 1987 to 1991.

Their friendship later expanded into a close family connection, becoming godmothers to each other’s children, making Cameron Brink the godsister of Stephen, Seth, and Sydel Curry. Moreover, Michelle and Sonya remain close friends to this day, sometimes appearing in podcasts and shows.
Cameron Brink Eyes Return After Long Injury Layoff
Cameron Brink’s WNBA journey hit a major hurdle early, but the Sparks forward is pushing for a strong return.
Brink was selected No. 2 overall in the 2024 WNBA draft and entered the league with high expectations. While high-profile rookies like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese grabbed the spotlight, the former Stanford Cardinal quietly made an impact, averaging 7.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. Unfortunately, an ACL tear ended her season after 15 games. She underwent surgery in July and hasn’t played since.

During her interview with Spectrum Sports’ Nikki Kay, Cameron Brink gave a brief update on her recovery, saying it’s going well and that the Sparks are helping her. While she didn’t give a firm timeline, she’s confident that she’ll return to the court soon.
“It’s been good, I have been surrounded by the best people, I have to shout out or organization, the Sparks, our training staff, they’ve all done such a good job taking care of me. Feeling good. It’s gonna take a little bit until I am back out there, but it’s feeling good,” Brink said.

Mentally, Brink says she’s grown from the setback.
“I’ve definitely become more resilient,” she added. “It’s not been easy, but I’ve got great people around me. Grit, for sure.”
Cameron Brink’s return is expected in the coming weeks.
