The Oklahoma City Thunder are having a strong start to their 2024-25 NBA regular season but they will be in for a tough challenge, with big man Chet Holmgren reportedly expected to miss several weeks due to a pelvic injury he suffered on Sunday versus the Golden State Warriors, per Shams Charania of ESPN.
Holmgren sustained the injury in the first quarter of the Warriors game while trying to contest a shot at the rim by Golden State forward Andrew Wiggins. The Thunder lost that game as well, 127-116.
Chet Holmgren speaks up about brutal injury
Needless to say, the looming absence of Holmgren is a huge blow to the Thunder, who have been relying a lot on the former Gonzaga Bulldogs star. Holmgren, meanwhile, shared a profound reflection on his current ordeal while at a hospital.
“Can’t tell if I feel better or worse about this having been through something similar before,” Holmgren posted on X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter) early Monday morning.
“On one hand I know how to approach it, I know what to do, what not to do and how beautiful the other side is. But on the other hand I’ve felt the frustration of this process, and the wear it puts on your mind. Most of all I’m hurt I can’t help my teammates and play for our fans and supporters for a while. Everyone who sticks with me and our team, along with my need for hoops, is a big part of my passion to return. Don’t pity me or feel bad, there’s lots of people out there rn with real problems that don’t heal. Anyways excuse my rambling just wanted to address our okc fans and family🧡💙🤍”
With Holmgren out,m the Thunder will likely get Shai Gilgeous-Alexander a heavier load, especially on offense. The same can be said for Jalen Williams. That said, it will be tough to replace the void left by Holmgren, particularly on the defensive front, as he is leading the Thunder this far this season in rebounds (8.7 ) and blocks (2.6) per game. Those are on top of his average of 16.4 points per game on 50.5 field goal percentage and 37.8 percent success rate on 3-point attempts.
