Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese bolstered her WNBA Rookie of the Year case, as she now holds the new franchise record for most offensive rebounds in a single season with 118 and counting during an 85-65 blowout loss against Phoenix Mercury on Thursday.
Angel Reese set the new franchise mark in the third quarter to break the record previously set by Sylvia Fowles (117 offensive rebounds) in 2013. The LSU product finished the game with 11 points and 15 rebounds but shot 4-for-14 from the field and 3-for-8 from the free-throw line.
Despite this, Angel Reese was not in a mood to celebrate since they’ve lost three of their last four WNBA games.
“I know you care a lot more about the results than records but you set another record today,” the reporter started before Reese interrupted.
“No, I don’t want to hear about no record today,” Reese replied before the reporter finished with her question.
The Chicago Sky rookie spoke more about her opponent, the Phoenix Mercury, offering praise to her counterpart, Britney Griner, who finished with 23 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and five blocks on 10-for-12 from the field.
“She’s a great player, really efficient tonight,’ Reese said. “Just being able to follow the game plan was something we didn’t do. We’ve got another shot at them on Sunday and I’m looking forward to it.”
Chicago Sky is still in the WNBA playoff picture
The Phoenix Mercury walloped the Chicago Sky right from the get-go, outscoring them 30-12 in the first period before putting the game beyond doubt by finishing the first half with a 50-28 edge.
The Chicago Sky missed the presence of Chennedy Carter, who was out due to a non-COVID illness, and Marina Mabrey, who was traded to the Connecticut Sun before the Olympic break.
The Chicago Sky are now 10-15 as a result, good enough for eighth place and two-and-a-half games ahead of the ninth-seeded Atlanta Dream.
