In a rocky off-season for the Cleveland Cavaliers, they secured their All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell to a max contract. This is a big move for the Cavaliers after they relieved J.B. Bickerstaff from his coaching duties, which curated rumors of low morale in the team’s locker room.
It also resulted in several trade rumors involving Mitchell, which magnified the locker room’s “low morale” rumors.
Details Of The New Donovan Mitchell Contract

According to the report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the deal is worth $150.3 million, including a player option for the 2027-2028 season. The contract is well earned. Mitchell has been an All-Star for five straight seasons. Donovan Mitchell averaged 26.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 6.1 assists last season for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
This is a great pickup for the Cavs, as Mitchell is 28 and in his prime. They can still utilize Mitchell alongside their young core roster to hopefully secure their second NBA championship.
The Cleveland Cavaliers Are Looking Forward To This Season

Now that the Cavs have secured their star player, they want to make another playoff push. Last season, they got past the Orlando Magic in a tight first-round series. However, they lost to the eventual NBA Champions, the Boston Celtics. Mitchell was out for several games due to a left knee injury.
They filled their coaching vacancy shortly after the Bickerstaff firing by acquiring Kenny Atkinson. Kenny was an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors and their 2021-22 championship team. He will also serve as an assistant coach for the French National Basketball Team at the Paris Olympics.
The team’s synergy seemed off in the first half of last year’s regular season, but they quickly became a dark horse NBA champion candidate after an 11-game win streak around the All-Star break.
Yet, there were chemistry issues between Mitchell and Cavs Point Guard Darius Garland. The Cavs were rumored to trade Garland before the Mitchell signing, but now it seems likely they will trade Garland. Garland averaged 18 points and 6 assists last season for Cleveland, off 44.6% shooting from the field.
