For the longest time, Cleveland Cavaliers fans were preparing for the worst after the team failed to get over the Boston Celtics in the second round of last season’s playoffs. In fact, rumors about Mitchell’s eventual departure started to fly the moment the Celtics made it to the Eastern Conference Finals.

So one can only imagine the surprise the fans got when their franchise cornerstone decided to tie himself down to the team and the city for three more seasons. While the terms were shorter than they would have liked, they are at least assured of a chance to make the playoffs within the next three seasons.

Fans couldn’t help but express their delight on social media for Spida’s decision to resume his days with the Cleveland logo on his chest.

    Per The Spun’s Matt Hladik:

“Spida dropping the Wolf of Wall Street meme is elite!” said Ohio-based writer Brandon Castel.

“Ok. It’s move for the sake of move time. The fanbase won’t settle for patience and running it back, not when the Jimmy situation has deteriorated. Very shaky times for a team that’s enjoyed mostly endless goodwill for basically 20 years,” said a disappointed Heat fan.

“The hopes and dreams of all those teams thinking they could get Spida on their squad dashed. That’s too bad,” another Cavs fan added.

“Day made! Let’s roll @spidadmitchell #LetEmKnow,” said “The Garage Beers” podcast.

Cleveland Cavaliers fans would be glad to know they have one of the league’s most exciting guards still leading the line for the team. Last season, Mitchell averaged 26.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.8 steals a game.

Not only is he productive on the hardwood, but his leadership in the locker room has also been a bright spot. As the de facto #1, Donovan Mitchell has stepped up to the call and is ready to take any challenges as the team’s leader.

It will be interesting to see how the Cavaliers will help create a team around Mitchell within the next three years. Fans hope that it will be enough to finally get them the second NBA title they’ve been looking for.
