Just recently, the Cleveland Cavaliers inked a new extension for emerging star Evan Mobley worth $269 million. This has led the franchise’s fans to express their outrage online for what they deem as an overpaid contract.
Before entering the NBA, Mobley played college basketball for the USC Trojans, where he was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year, Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, and a Consensus Second-Team All-American as a freshman in 2021.
Mobley, along with his older brother Isaiah, began playing basketball at a young age under the guidance of their father, Eric, a former basketball player. Evan was initially reluctant to play basketball but became more interested in the sport in eighth grade when he grew to 6’4″. He played high school basketball at Rancho Christian School in Temecula, California, and was named the California Gatorade Player of the Year and The Press-Enterprise player of the year as a junior and senior.
As a professional, Mobley has had a promising start to his NBA career with the Cavaliers. In his rookie season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and showcased his versatility as a two-way big man. Mobley’s combination of size, athleticism, and defensive prowess have made him a valuable asset for the Cavaliers, who are looking to build a contending team around him and fellow young stars Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen.
Cleveland Cavaliers Fans Express Their Dismay Over Evan Mobley’s $269 Million Deal
After playing in his third year in the league, Mobley was bestowed with a $269 million extension for five years, as seen in a tweet on X by NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski. The thing is, fan reaction to the news isn’t really positive for both the young big man and Cleveland.

“$269M for Evan Mobley we can pay teachers more,” Knicks Meme tweeted.
“Holy overpay,” 30 Problems said.
“Mobley making more then Brunson I’ve done seen it all,” BucksShowYou reacted.
“Overpay no cap,” JXY shared.
“$70M a year for Evan Mobley is insanity,” StephMuse posted.
“Brunson signed this same offseason and makes $70M less than that,” JaguarGator expressed.
Over the course of three seasons in the NBA, Mobley has averaged 15.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game. He also shot 54 percent from the field, 26 percent from deep, and 68 percent from the free throw line during that period.
It remains to be seen whether Mobley can justify all the money Cleveland gave him in the coming years or it’ll go down as a bad deal down the line. Hopefully, new head coach Kenny Atkinson can make the most out of the young big man in the years to come.
