The Cleveland Cavaliers got the job done on the Donovan Mitchell front this week, as the star shooting guard agreed to a new extension deal with the Cavs.
Mitchell has been an integral part of the Cavaliers ever since they acquired him via a trade with the Utah Jazz back in 2022, and he’ll continue to be the leader of the Eastern Conference franchise for years to come.
Cleveland Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell is a special talent
The Cavaliers certainly value Mitchell’s abilities on the court, especially his scoring ways. As noted by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Mitchell is just the first backcourt player to put up at least an average of 20.0 points per game in his first seven seasons in the league since no other than Basketball Hall of Famer and former NBA Most Valuable Player Allen Iverson.
Mitchell is the first guard to average a minimum of 20 points in each of his first seven NBA seasons since Allen Iverson. He also averaged career highs in assists (6.1) and steals (1.8) a year ago — ranking third in steals per game and sixth in deflections league-wide.
Mitchell has that streak alive after averaging 26.6 points per game in the 2023-24 NBA season when he also guided the Cavaliers to a second-round appearance in the 2024 NBA Playoffs. He shot 46.2 percent from the field and made 36.8 percent of his attempts from the 3-point region.
The Cavs expect Mitchell to continue leading the team’s attack as they look to bring the franchise’s first NBA title since 2016.
