West Virginia claimed a victory in Boulder on Sunday, as the Mountaineers beat the Buffaloes 78-70 in the first ever meeting between the two schools. West Virginia was able to get back on track out west after losing to Arizona just one game prior.
Mountaineers Convert Points Off Turnovers
In a game that was riddled with fouls on both sides, West Virginia managed to convert on 20/28 attempts from the free throw line, while Colorado posted 24/30. A player from both teams would eventually foul out of the contest, including Mountaineer Eduardo Andre, who went a perfect 5/5 from the field and 2/2 from the bonus that resulted in 12 points. Colorado outrebounded West Virginia 35-30, however the Mountaineers would force 14 total turnovers throughout the game, while they gave up only half that many to Colorado. WVU managed to score 12 points off of the Buffaloes mishaps compared to only 2 points converted by Colorado.
S(Quad) of Mountaineers Fight Off Buffaloes
A trio of seniors helped WVU secure the win over Colorado on Sunday by posting double digit points. Along with big man Andre, star senior Javon Small continued to help his Big 12 leading average by putting up a game high 26 points, to include 4/10 from deep and 10/12 from the charity stripe. He also dished out 7 assists, 1 shy of his season high. Fellow senior Joseph Yesufu posted his highest points of the season at 18 off of the bench, going 6/9 from the field. Freshman Jonathan Powell also contributed 10 points of his own in what has been a promising collegiate start for the young guard, now averaging 9.2 PPG for West Virginia.
Injury Update
Tucker DeVries and Jayden Stone still remain sidelined for West Virginia, with no timetable in mind for their return. Head coach Darian DeVries continues to play any news of his players injuries close to the vest, however a return for both players seems imminent within the coming games. The Mountaineers will need all the help they can get as they continue to grind a grueling Big 12 conference slate.
