After propelling the Dallas Mavericks to a sensational clutch win over the Denver Nuggets on Sunday, Kyrie Irving reminded everyone that they are still title contenders and have more than what it takes to win it all.
Sure enough, after a statement win against the reigning champions, Irving couldn’t have chosen a better time to make the declaration.
Kyrie Irving, Dallas Mavericks Eyeing NBA Championship
As if saying that they won’t be satisfied with just winning a regular season game against the defending champions, Irving emphasized to reporters following their 107-105 win over the Nuggets that they are focused on winning it all.
Irving was actually asked about the Mavs’ ceiling, and he pointed out that they are playing for the championship and nothing less.
“Championship is the ultimate goal. So, that’s what we’re playing for,” Irving declared, via Grant Afseth of DallasBasketball.com.
The one-time champion also highlighted the Mavs’ mentality, noting that they are competitive and always want to beat the best teams in the league. Sure enough, that should bode well with their goal of competing for the 2023-24 championship.
“We’re not satisfied just with going in and being competitive with some of the best teams in the West or the league. We want to beat them, and that’s the same mentality other teams have against us,” Irving added.
Dallas Mavericks Take Down Denver Nuggets in the Clutch
Sure enough, Kyrie Irving and the Dallas Mavericks showed championship-caliber basketball on Sunday in their battle with the Denver Nuggets.
It certainly wasn’t an easy win, and at one point, it looked like they were on the verge of collapsing. After leading by nine points with less than five minutes remaining, the Mavericks saw their lead disappear as the Nuggets take a 105-102 lead with 28 seconds on the clock.
A Luka Doncic triple tied the game for Dallas, and Irving took care of the rest with 2.8 seconds remaining on the clock. After Maxi Kleber inbounded the ball and sent it to Irving, the veteran guard quickly got to work as he created some space and separation from his defender in Jokic with a hesitation move. After that, Irving pulled off a left-handed hook shot from near the 3-point line to win it for Dallas.
Dallas really needed the win as they look to climb up the West standings. They are now 39-29 on the campaign, good for seventh in the conference. If they can stay resilient and play as tough as they did against the Nuggets, it’s not hard to see them rising and becoming title contenders.
