Dwight Powell has achieved something that not even Charles Barkley and Dwyane Wade did while playing for the national team, as he holds the record for having the highest field goal percentage (minimum five field goal attempts) in a single Olympic Games run.
The Dallas Mavericks center shot 90 percent from the floor for Canada in Paris, missing only one field goal out of 10 attempts in four games to surpass Andres Jiminez’s mark, when he shot 73.9 percent in the 1988 Games.
Powell’s role with Canada is the same in the NBA, as he would often come off the bench to be their energy guy. Besides going 9-for-10 from the field in Paris, the Dallas Mavericks role player tallied 26 points, 23 rebounds, four assists, and six steals in roughly 22 minutes per game.
Canada won their first three Olympic games against Greece, Australia, and Spain before losing to France in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Dwight Powell is playing for a new Dallas Mavericks contract
Dwight Powell is entering the second year of his three-year, $12 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks next season. After 2024-25, the former second-round pick has a $4 million player option he can trigger for 2025-26.
The 33-year-old has fallen out of Jason Kidd’s rotation since the arrivals of PJ Washington, Daniel Gafford, and Dereck Lively II. In 63 regular season games last season, Powell only averaged 3.3 points and 3.4 rebounds in 67.9 percent shooting from the field in 13.3 minutes per contest.
