It will take a while before Dallas Mavericks fans and the rest of the NBA (especially heartbroken Golden State Warriors fans) get used to the sight of Klay Thompson wearing the Dallas blue.
The four-time NBA champion will be playing for another franchise for the first time in his career, and he’s already saying the right things to get the fans of the 2024 NBA Finalists excited about the upcoming season.
While Klay is no longer the lethal two-way athlete he once was during his peak years as a Warrior, he can provide the extra offensive spark the Mavs badly needed when they lost to the Boston Celtics in five games.
However, Thompson reveals that there’s more to him joining the Warriors than just competing for a fifth ring. He explained that he rediscovered something in Mark Cuban’s Dallas that he didn’t feel in the Warriors locker room for a long time.
Klay Thompson claims he feels ‘wanted’ by the Dallas Mavericks
Thompson explained that the change of scenery was, while painful, necessary for his career. The sharpshooter also explained that he’s glad he chose to play with the Mavericks because he feels the appreciation the team has for his talents.
Per a BBC Sports article:
“Coming here is just such a fresh start,” Thompson said.
“Feeling just wanted again, like I bring great value… It just gets me excited to go out there and even work out after this press conference and get shots up.”
Thompson may not have the same athleticism he used to boast with the Dubs after missing two entire seasons due to knee and Achilles issues.
However, he proved in his last season with the Dubs that he can still play at a high level. He finished his 13th NBA season with 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists on 43.2% shooting and 38.7% from deep.
He’s not expected to become a high-volume scorer because Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving will take up those roles. However, he will be a brilliant third option should opposing teams try to clamp the star duo.
Dallas Mavericks fans hope that this move will help them finally get Banner #2 up in the rafters.
