Kyrie Irving hasn’t had the best NBA Finals for the Dallas Mavericks. While Game 2 wasn’t the one-sided blowout Game 1 was, Uncle Drew still wasn’t the effective contributor he has been throughout the postseason.
There are multiple factors behind Kyrie’s poor performance, but that doesn’t excuse his failure to back Luka Doncic up in their Finals run. However, the man isn’t hitting the panic button just yet as he reminded fans that there’s still more basketball to be played.
To make things even easier for the fans, he provided a clear explanation on what affected his play in Boston and what fans can expect as the Mavs head to Game 3 with a 0-2 series deficit.
Kyrie Irving promises that he’ll be better as the Dallas Mavericks prepare to play Game 3 at home
Irving has been transparent about his struggles in Boston. It’s evident with how he played at the TD Garden that he’s still affected by what transpired during his time as a Celtic.
Howwever, he assured fans that he’s more than okay now and is in a better place with the Mavericks, as reported by The Spun’s Daniel Bates:
“I know sometimes in sports, it’s literally about the end goal and result in what you accomplish, and that’s one thing,” Irving said. “But we’re still human. At the end of the day, I wasn’t my best self during that time. When I look back on it, I just see it as a time where I learned how to let go of things and learned how to talk through my emotions.”
He also sent a message to Boston’s rabid fan base as he and the Mavs walked off the court. He promised them the Mavs will be back in Boston for a Game 5 that they will remember.
However, he of all people understands that it takes more than words to win Finals games. In the two games he’s played so far, he’s only averaging 14.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 4.6 assists a game. If the Mavericks want to even the series, he needs to step up his production.
