The Dallas Mavericks are deep in their preparations to face the Boston Celtics in this year’s NBA Finals. Fans are excited to see how this series will play out as both teams feature superstar players and play exciting styles of ball.
Kyrie Irving is one of the players analysts and fans will pay close attention to in his Finals return. The veteran guard has been nothing but phenomenal for the Mavericks ever since he was acquired from the Brooklyn Nets a season ago.
However, the way he’s been playing is also drawing attention for an entirely different reason. Some believe Irving should have been a part of Team USA for the coming Olympics. The team could use a player of his quality as a boost who could help the United States win.
One popular analyst revealed the biggest reason behind Uncle Drew’s exclusion from the Olympic roster.
Stephen A. Smith thinks non-basketball reasons pushed Kyrie Irving off Team USA
Stephen A. Smith believes that the Dallas Mavericks star has everything needed to thrive in the Olympics. However, he argued that Irving’s hot takes probably cost him a spot in a team that would have LeBron James and Stephen Curry as its star players.
“We all know that’s about imagery, that’s about Team USA, that’s about who you want representing the red, white and blue and stuff like that. We all know that. We know that ain’t about basketball all the time,” Smith said.
SAS clarified that the snub isn’t as big as Isiah Thomas’ absence from the Dream Team, but Irving would have been a great addition to the squad.
Uncle Drew is focused on helping the Dallas Mavericks win against the Boston Celtics
Since Irving will not make the trip to Paris, Irving can focus all of his attention on helping the Mavericks overcome a Boston team that is widely tipped to win the Finals.
Kai has been nothing short of phenomenal for the Mavericks in the postseason, averaging 22.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 1.2 steals a game while shooting 48.5% from the floor and 42.1% from deep.
The Celtics will be aware of his abilities and try everything they could to stop him. It’s going to be up to him and Luka Doncic to overcome a stronger Boston roster and win his second ring.
