All-Star guard Luka Doncic didn’t gain any fans when he fouled out of Game 3 against the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. Among those who torched the Dallas Mavericks star is ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst in a scathing take that exposed what he did wrong during the match.
One of the major talking points from Game 3 was the disappointing performance of Doncic, particularly on the defensive end of the court. Despite being considered a top candidate for the 2024 MVP, he failed to deliver and some have attributed this to the referees impeding his ability to showcase his best basketball. However, both fans and analysts have a different perspective on his display, offering a harsh assessment of the Slovenian star that challenges one of the fundamental aspects of his playing style.

It is evident that defense is not Doncic’s strongest attribute. Standing at 6’7″, the guard doesn’t exert as much effort defensively compared to his diverse offensive skills. Recognizing this, coach Jason Kidd has made efforts to surround him with strong defenders who can compensate for his defensive shortcomings.
While this strategy may work during the regular season, it becomes more challenging to mask Doncic’s defensive weaknesses in the intensity of the Finals, where the Celtics relentlessly exploit any defensive matchup involving him. This was evident when he attempted to draw a charge against All-Star wing Jaylen Brown in semi-transition with 4:12 remaining, but the referees called a blocking foul instead. As a result, the Mavs star fouled out of the game, marking the third time in his six-year NBA career and the first time in 48 playoff games that he has fouled out.

As it stands, Doncic’s deficiencies on the defensive end has been the Achilles’ heel Boston exploited during the past three games. Throughout the regular season, though, he boasted 1.7 defensive box rating, which meant the MVP candidate was a positive contributor on defense. However, Boston’s strategic offense that has targeted him as made all the difference for their team.

It remains to be seen whether Doncic and company will adjust to this problem in Game 4 or not. Otherwise, they would find the Celtics hoisting the championship trophy over them.
