Klay Thompson’s final game in a Golden State Warriors uniform was a brutal one, as he went just 0/10 from the field in an elimination game against the Sacramento Kings. Now with the Dallas Mavericks, Thompson reminded everyone that he remains a dangerous perimeter threat.
“At this point in my career, you still can’t leave me open,” Thompson said during Tuesday’s introductory press conference (h/t CBS Sports).
Will Klay Thompson be Klay Thompson with the Dallas Mavericks?
The Mavericks decided to take his talents to Dallas after spending his first 13 years in the NBA with the Warriors. At 34 years old, Thompson may be past his prime, but there aren’t many bigger mistakes an opponent can make on the court than leave him open from anywhere on the floor. In the 2023-24 NBA regular season, Thompson made 38.7 percent of his attempts from deep.
Moreover, he knocked down 39.2 percent of his 3-point tries when the nearest defender was four to six feet away from him. He also made 47.9 percent of his 3-point shots when the closest defender was over six feet away.
Dallas believes that Thompson can further unlock the true potential of an offense that will continue to revolve around Luka Doncic. The Mavericks severely missed an outside threat in the 2024 NBA Finals where they buried only 31.6 percent of their 3-point attempts in the series against the Boston Celtics.
Dallas was fourth in the entire NBA last season with 38.2 three-point attempts per game and fourth with 14.0 made threes per contest, giving them just a 36.8 percent success rate from deep — good for only 14th overall.
