The Dallas Mavericks want to return to the NBA Finals after a disappointing Finals performance against the Boston Celtics. While the players on the court are the primary agents who turn plans into reality, the people running the organization behind the scenes are just as important to the franchise’s success.
Despite their disappointing run in June, the Mavs are doing everything to return to the Finals and add another banner to the rafters of the American Airlines Center. When one of the team’s long-time executives announced his retirement, they quickly moved to find a capable replacement to help the team win it all.
The man they chose will be bringing championship experience that the Mavs badly need.
Dallas Mavericks hire Rick Welts as CEO
The Mavericks have picked up former Golden State Warriors executive Rick Welts to take over for Cynt Marshall, who is retiring as CEO at the end of the year.
Larry Brown Sports’ Darryn Albert writes about Welts’ impressive resume that would help the Mavs’ basketball aspirations:
The 71-year-old Welts is a five-time NBA champion. He won his first title in 1979 as the director of public relations for the then-Seattle SuperSonics and then won his next four as president and COO of the Golden State Warriors (in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022). Welts has also served in the NBA league office as executive vice president, CMO, and president of NBA Properties and later worked as president of the Phoenix Suns prior to his Warriors stint. In 2011, Welts became the first high-ranking executive in major professional sports to openly come out as gay.
Acquiring Welts is perfect for the Mavericks, given their aspirations of winning titles with Luka Doncic. His involvement in Kevin Durant’s move to the Bay makes the possibility of high-caliber players moving to Dallas all the more likely.
For a franchise that’s lacking one player from finally winning it all, Rick Welts may be the person Mark Cuban and the rest of the Mavericks organization have been waiting for all along.
