The Dallas Mavericks are bringing back Spencer Dinwiddie in hopes of finally winning an NBA title in the Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving era.
According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Dinwiddie, who played for Dallas from 2022-2023, is set to sign a one-year deal to return to the Mark Cuban-owned franchise.

ESPN’s Marc Stein earlier reported that Dennis Smith Jr., another former Maverick, and Talen Horton-Tucker were among the other options Dallas looked to sign before finally deciding to bring back Dinwiddie
Dinwiddie entered free agency after playing one season with the Los Angeles Lakers. He only got to play in 28 regular season games, though, averaging 6.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per outing off the bench.
Dinwiddie only tallied two rebounds and one assist in barely five minutes of action in the Lakers’ 110-106 win against the New Orleans Pelicans in the play-in game.
In the first round of the playoffs against the Denver Nuggets, he only tallied 3.0 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in a little over 14 and a half minutes per game.
Spencer Dinwiddie’s previous time with Dallas Mavericks
Before rejoining the team this offseason, Dinwiddie first ended up with the Mavericks on Feb. 10, 2022 in a mid-season trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Washington Wizards.
Davis Bertans was also sent to Dallas in the said swap, while Washington also picked up a 2022 second-round pick in the process, which they used to draft Yannick Nzosa, who is still in the Spanish league.
Dinwiddie turned out to be the help Doncic was looking for as the Mavs earned their place in the Western Conference Finals.
The Golden State Warriors would eliminate the Mavericks in five games en route to winning the NBA title.
Dinwiddie did a lot in trying to save Dallas’ season in Game 5, though, tallying 26 points, four rebounds, and two blocks.
With his efforts, Dinwiddie, who only got to start in 10 games out of 41 both in the regular season and the playoffs, got the starting role to start the 2022-2023 season.
However, after just 53 games, the six-foot-five combo guard found himself traded to the Brooklyn Nets in a blockbuster trade that sent Kyrie Irving to the Mavs.
Dinwiddie, a second-round pick in the 2014 draft, spent some of the best years of his career with Brooklyn and was poised to be the same again during the latter part of the 2022-2023 season and early into the following year.
However, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors for Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young. Toronto then sent Dinwiddie to free agency, giving him an opportunity to sign with a title contender in the Lakers.
