UConn Huskies men’s basketball head coach Dan Hurley recently opened up about his viral moment where he lost his cool and shouted at one referee during a game. In the interview, the head coach admitted to his mistake and opened up about his honest feelings about it.
In an interview with “60 Minutes,” Dan Hurley opened up about the indecent where he shouted “I’m the best coach in the f***ing sport” to a referee, an incident he now described as “embarrassing.”
“I’m complex,” Hurley said. “Now listen, I had no idea—if I knew the camera was on me, there’s no way I would’ve said it. But I’m embarrassed.”
“When I get into it, at sometimes I will say or do anything that I think may give me some type of an advantage either with an official or with firing my team up, or with carrying myself with a confidence and a swagger that is going to give my team the ability to play better.”
The said incident happened during a game between UConn and Butler earlier this year. Late in the first half, Hurley was caught on camera berating the official for turning his back while Hurley was trying to argue a call.

Dan Hurley Talks Pressure Over Family’s Legacy
Dan Hurley comes from a family deeply rooted in basketball. Bob Hurley Sr., a Hall of Fame high school coach, led St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey, to 26 state championships over his 39-year career and is the father of Dan Hurley. Dan’s brother, Bobby Hurley, was a star at Duke University before playing in the NBA and is currently the head coach at Arizona State University.

In the same interview, Hurley opened up about the pressure of falling short of his family’s legacy and accomplishments.
“Just how I failed to play up to, to live up to, to succeed up to the Hurley standard in basketball, it caused a lot of pain,” he said. “It gets to the point where you’re a shell of yourself.”
“You’re not shooting the ball the way you’ve had your whole life. You have a hard time catching the ball, or even dribbling the ball. You got the yips in the way.”

Under head coach Dan Hurley, the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team had a strong performance during the 2024-2025 season, finishing with a 21-9 record and securing the 3rd spot in the Big East Conference.
