Dawn Staley, head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, recently settled the matter of Raven Johnson’s recent comments about Kamilla Cardoso and Ashlyn Watkins in an WIS News interview. After the team won against the Indiana Hoosiers in the second round of the NCAA tournament, Johnson stated to reporters that the team did not require the presence of Cardoso or Watkins to win.
The comment definitely left fans and viewers scratching their hands, and many different twists to the story came out. However, it was only much later that fans realized that Johnson’s comments about her teammates was to call out Indiana’s Sydney Parrish’s remarks that her team would have an easy outing against South Carolina which will be playing without Cardoso and Watkins.
“Raven’s a competitor. The Indiana player is a competitor. Sometimes, as competitors, you say things to get under your opponent’s skin, which the comment did get under our kid’s skin. “You got to grade our team on this year. We haven’t been with Ashlyn or Kamilla for a very long time. I think what got under the skin of Raven is probably the ‘smart’ comment. I think our team, Raven knows this, we’re a very disciplined basketball team. We’re a very ‘together’ basketball team. We’re a team that can make adjustments so Raven was just speaking on that, being the competitor that she is.” Dawn Staley said to Judi Gatson and Billie Jean Shaw in the WIS News interview.
Kamilla Cardoso played for Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks until 2024 after which she was picked up by the WNBA’s Chicago Sky. Meanwhile, Ashlyn Watkins tore her ACL in January this year, and was ruled out of this NCAA season.
