The Sacramento Kings made a major decision before 2024 ended and fired Mike Brown as the team’s head coach, following a 13–18 start to the 2024-25 NBA season. While the season continues, former player DeMarcus Cousins said the situation is similar to what happened during his time with the franchise.
As of this writing, the Kings have not named their choice for the next head coach. They’ve named former player Doug Christie as the interim head coach. Under Christie, Sacramento has gone 4-1 in the last five games.
Even with that, Cousins believes something has to be fixed from within the organization. The former great stated that rather than placing the blame on coaches and players, change had to originate at the highest levels of the business. On Monday, the four-time All-Star discussed his old squad on “Run It Back.”
“History repeats itself,” Cousins said. “I’ve seen the story before, it’s the same blame game. It’s always the next guy, it was me at one point, it was Luke [Walton] at another point, it was the next coach after that. I remember it was Buddy Hield. It’s always the next guy’s fault.
“It starts at the top, gotta find stability. It’s been a lot. I don’t even wanna sit here and try to count all the coaches but it’s been a lot of coaches, it’s no stability, it’s no direction, it’s a constant blame game, starts at the top. Top has to get it together. It’s time for some new advisors, get some new friends, get some people that are smarter than you or you feel that are smarter than you to help you make these decisions. It’s time to really focus on where the blame is… Just get some new friends, bro. That my best advice. Decisions that are being constantly made are not working. You are continuing to fail, this was a step back.”
“Just get some new friends, bro. That’s my best advice.” 😳🫣
Do you agree with @boogiecousins that the Kings won’t take steps forward until something is changed at the top of their organization? pic.twitter.com/zRHPtBjYd3

How was DeMarcus Cousins’ stint with the Kings?
DeMarcus Cousins was the fifth pick of the Kings during the 2010 NBA Draft. Given his potential while at Kentucky, he was anticipated to be the team’s future. It was a slow process, but Cousins eventually became a star after three seasons in the league.
During his seven years in Sacramento, he averaged 21.1 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists. However, the organization didn’t get to partner him with a star during his tenure. In all of the years he spent playing for the Kings, Cousins never led the organization to a playoff appearance.
DeMarcus Cousins was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2017 where he helped the franchise achieve notable success.
