NBA fans may know Dennis Schroder as a great point guard who enjoyed bursts of dominance throughout his NBA stint. However, hoops fans who follow the international game understand how dangerous of a player he becomes whenever he puts on the Germany jersey.
The veteran point guard has been the key figure for the German men’s basketball team in the same level Dirk Nowitzki was irreplaceable during his peak. He’s the centerpiece of a German team that includes the likes of Franz Wagner and Daniel Theis.
Schroder was indispensable during Germany’s incredible 2023 FIBA World Cup run, and he seems to be doing the same thing for the squad in this year’s Olympics. He’s quickly establishing himself as one of the greatest players the international game has ever witnessed, and he deserves every bit of credit that’s gone his way.
As his team prepares to face France in the semi-finals, he talks about the importance of representing his country and what his team did to prepare for Victor Wembanyama and France.
Dennis Schroder explains Germany’s mentality as they prepared for France in the semi-finals of the 2024 Olympics
Schroder talked about his team’s approach during the Games and the approach they took against the French and their home-court advantage.
“If we do our things right as our team, if we play on a high level and we do the things we can do, I take us over anybody,” said Schroder, noting that there could be as many as 12 Hall of Famers on the US roster. “That’s not being not arrogant, but just the high level of character we have in this locker room and the IQ. Our chemistry is the biggest thing.
“So, they have a lot of firepower. But we got our team chemistry and everybody knows how to play. It’s going to be a hard fight. If we have a perfect game against them, it’s still a possibility to lose. That’s what you have to understand. If we play a perfect game to whatever team, we probably win by 15, 20, 30 points. But if you have a perfect game against the States, you still might lose.”
Schroder has been performing well for Germany in the 2024 Olympics, averaging 18.0 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 7.8 assists a game.
While Schroder and company ultimately failed to win against France, he and his compatriots can still fight for bronze and head home with their heads held high.
