Prior to the start of the 2024 NBA free agency, it was reported that the Denver Nuggets and star point guard Jamal Murray were in the process of discussing a potential max extension. That conversation takes the backseat for now for Murray, as he is preparing with Team Canada for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.

Via Troy Renck of The Denver Post:

I asked #Nuggets star Jamal Murray about his potential max contract extension after Canada’s game vs Team USA. He said, “When we get there, we get there I guess. I am playing games for Canada so it’s not on my mind.”

The said contract extension that Murray could potentially sign before the start of the 2024-25 NBA season is worth $209 million for four years.

There is no denying that Murray is one of the biggest reasons the Nuggets are enjoying elite status in the NBA. While the Nuggets failed to defend the title they won in 2023 after falling prey to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft, they still are regarded as a legitimate title contender.

As long as they have the tandem of Murray and three-time league Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic, the Nuggets will be a force to reckon with on the court.

Jokic is under contract until the 2026-27 NBA season, excluding a player option for the 2027-28 campaign.

Murray, meanwhile, only has a year left on his current deal that will pay him $36 million in the coming season.

Last season, the 27-year-old Murray averaged 21.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game while shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 42.5 percent from behind the arc.
