The Detroit Pistons are in need of any help they can get to become better in the league, especially after several seasons of becoming stuck in the bottom. In this regard, the front office may consider selecting G League Ignite star Matas Buzelis to gain a Franz Wagner-like player in the lineup.
Despite the G League Ignite’s disappointing record, NBA scouts were still intrigued by why Buzelis was once viewed as a potential top overall pick entering the season. While he has fallen out of that conversation, his easy-to-envision fit and appealing physical profile have kept scouts interested.

Standing at 6’8″, Buzelis showcases the ability to play on and off the ball, initiating fast breaks, creating in space, and knocking down catch-and-shoot opportunities. While he hasn’t demonstrated enough ball-handling to be a primary option, he can make plays as a secondary weapon off spot-ups and dribble handoffs, much like what Wagner has been to All-Star forward Paolo Banchero and the Orlando Magic.
Buzelis’ plus size and athleticism for a wing player are evident, particularly on finishes above the rim and blocked shots. However, his lack of upper-body strength can be exploited, as physical defense can disrupt his driving ability. As he continues to develop, he remains an intriguing prospect with a tantalizing combination of skills and physical tools.
G League Star Matas Buzelis Named As Detroit Pistons’ Potential Pick In 2024 NBA Draft

As it stands, the Pistons have a lot of holes when it comes to their roster construction. An article by Michael Sotto for Hoops Hype details why Detroit can benefit with the selection of Buzelis.
“Regarding the draft projection of Matas Buzelis to Detroit, there are two other Tellems worth mentioning – Pistons Vice Chairman Arn Tellem and his son Michael Tellem, Buzelis’ agent.
While the family connection is undeniable, this isn’t a case of nepotism. Buzelis is considered one of the top prospects in the draft as a versatile swingman who can handle the ball well for his size, block shots, and can stretch the floor, albeit inconsistently at times.
Buzelis has been compared to Franz Wagner by multiple executives who’ve spoken with HoopsHype. If Buzelis is selected by Detroit and fulfills that potential, the Langdon era will be off to a good start,” Sotto wrote.
In the three years Wagner has played in the NBA, the Orlando forward under head coach Jamahl Mosley averaged 19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He also shot 57 percent from two but posted an inefficient 28 percent from deep.

It’s not yet known where Buzelis will land after the 2024 NBA Draft. If he goes to Detroit, the G League Ignite star can help the franchise get out from the rut they’re in.
