Without a doubt, Rajon Rondo is one of the most intelligent and accomplished players to ever play in the NBA. But if his former teammate, Dwight Howard, had his way, the two-time champion would be named as the Detroit Pistons’ new head coach.
In the 2023-24 season, the Pistons faced significant challenges, finishing with the worst record in the NBA and missing the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year. The season began with Dwane Casey resigning as head coach, and Monty Williams taking over the helm.

The Pistons started the season 2-1, but then experienced a franchise-record 28-game losing streak from October 30 to December 30, tying the longest single-season losing streak in NBA history. They became the thirteenth team to have a winless month, going 0-15 in November.
With a final record of 14-68, the Pistons had the worst overall record in the league, surpassing the 1979-80 team’s previous franchise-worst mark of 16-66. Despite Williams’ six-year contract, he was ultimately fired following the disastrous season. The Pistons’ struggles throughout the 2023-24 campaign highlighted the team’s ongoing challenges and the need for significant changes and improvements in the seasons ahead.
Former NBA Star Dwight Howard Pitches Rajon Rondo as the Detroit Pistons’ New Head Coach

With Williams out of the picture, Detroit needs a competent personality to coach the team next season. In Howard’s tweet on X, though, Rondo is the ideal candidate to be named as the Pistons’ new head coach.
“Man give Rondo a Headcoach job at Detroit I bet he turn everything around!” Howard tweeted.
Over the course of his 16-year career in the NBA, Rondo has won two rings, three assists titles, and four All-Star selections. He also has averages of 9.8 points, 4.5 assists, and 7.9 assists per game during that run while making a name in the league for his versatility and playmaking abilities.
He spent over eight seasons with the Boston Celtics, winning a championship in 2008. After leaving the Celtics, he became a journeyman, playing for several teams over the next seven and a half years, including winning a second championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. He is also ranked highly in multiple NBA statistical categories, including triple-doubles.

While Rondo may seem like the ideal guy to take over the Pistons’ job, there’s still no guarantee since he has no experience in this field. In any case, a lot of eyes will be on the two-time champion to see if he can land a coaching gig down the line.
