It’s hard for someone outside the Detroit Pistons fandom to see a way out of the current predicament they find themselves in. They haven’t improved a single bit since their fluke run in the 2019 playoffs under Dwane Casey, and it’s been even longer since they had any meaningful playoff runs.
However, the 2024-25 season may finally be the year where they make significant progress on their championship aspirations. They extended Cade Cunningham’s stay in Motor City as their centerpiece with a huge five-year contract.
New arrivals also give hope to a distraught fanbase. Tobias Harris will be coming in as a reliable veteran presence who looks to redeem his image after a disastrous spell in Philadelphia. J.B. Bickerstaff is also excited to work with a “fun” team after a good run with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Another major talking point for Detroit is Ron Holland. The fifth overall pick of the 2024 Draft was a standout for the G-League Ignite, and he showed fans what to look forward to for the upcoming season after a spectacular Summer League performance.
Ron Holland scores 23 points for Detroit Pistons vs. Utah Jazz in Summer League
The Utah Jazz were the Pistons’ latest opponents in the Summer League. The game wasn’t a close fight as the Jazz outlasted Detroit with an 87-97 final score. However, there was a point when the Jazz lead by as much as 26 points during the game.
During this game, the G-League Ignite standout showed his value to the Pistons as he led an inspired albeit ineffective comeback push. He had an impressive night after 23 points while playing limited minutes.

The performance shows how much he has matured since his season with the G-League Ignite. 6’8″ forward averaged 18.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks in his 15 games with Ignite.
The performance validated his epic rant where he called out the press and the fans for calling his class weak compared to previous years. If he manages to repeat this performance regularly against NBA competition, there’s no reason he wouldn’t emerge as a favorite to win next season’s Rookie of the Year honors.
